In this lovely town you can find everything which attracts tourists: streets of the inner town creating an air of history, architectural rarities built in Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance styles, historical monuments, and local culture. There are marvellous buildings of the past, little curved streets, and a medieval atmosphere of the squares, delicately fashioned balconies, and arched gateways with their Gothic sedilia. From many parts of the town one can catch a glimpse of the old town walls. Some parts of the old city have a village atmosphere, with cheerfully inviting wine cellars. In 1975 Sopron received the European gold medal for monument protection, since it is the second richest city in architectural monuments in Hungary. Due to the beauty of its buildings and the spectacular collections of its museums, Sopron has earned the title”the town of museums”. One of the oldest museums of Hungary (founded in 1867) offers several permanent exhibitions, which attract a large number of visitors every year. The care of the past is shown by the existence of numerous public and private collections. The historical city centre is filled with cheerful and sparkling life.
