THE TOWN OF CONFERENCES
The eclectic style Liszt Ferenc Conference and Cultural Centre is the venue for most of the scientific and cultural events organized in Sopron. The history of this building marks the unity of arts and sciences. The ballrooms, theatre and concert halls, exhibition rooms and pavilions of the five-storey building host many outstanding events so that the Conference Centre has become the most important cultural and scientific centre of the whole region. Higher education has remarkable traditions as well. The University of West Hungary (with its central offices based in Sopron) offers quality higher education, and ensures a scientific background to the cultural and spiritual life of the town. The first theatre performance in Sopron was held in a mill in 1769. The nationally respected theatrical company moved to the present building in 1840.
